Design and development of a smartphone app for displaying real-time machine data in the context of Industry 4.0

Timeframe and Context

The project was carried out from March 2022 to July 2022 as part of the bachelor’s degree project in cooperation with the Digital Laboratory at Kempten University of Applied Sciences and DMG Mori GmbH.

The goal was to increase the efficiency of machine operators by means of a mobile app that provides machine data in real time.

Together with a fellow student, I developed the iOS app and took on the implementation of key app functionalities and the integration of interfaces.

Implementation and Tech Stack

For the implementation, the machine data was integrated via a REST API, a secure authentication process was implemented, and a dashboard was developed to visualize the machine statuses. In addition, detailed information on individual machines is displayed and current errors are provided, including contact details for quick troubleshooting.

The tech stack consisted of Swift for the iOS app and the REST API of the backend.

Challenges and Results

The app was successfully developed and deployed, then used in pilot operations with customers. It laid the foundation for further development in subsequent projects and shows how real-time data can be made usable in the context of Industry 4.0.
